The Late Show: "Fight Club"

Despite the first rule being expressly not to talk about it, David Fincher's adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk novel was one of the most talked about films of the late '90s. Edward Norton co-stars as an alienated insomniac stuck in a dull white-collar job who gets off on attending disease support group meetings. That is until he meets Tyler Durden, wildcard soap salesman. Bonding over their mutual disgust for consumer culture, the pair develop an unusual hobby: beating the shit out of each other. Soon… Show more their underground club becomes a full-fledged phenomenon, with disaffected young men across the country forming their own clubs to channel primal aggression into life-affirming brutal, bare-knuckled brawls. Then Helena Bonham Carter gets mixed up in their bromance and things just get weirder. Sure, a lot has changed since its initial release… war and recession; Ikea has continued to saturate our lives; the word "bromance" exists; and Brad Pitt is, well, still handsome and wildly successful. Nevertheless, FIGHT CLUB still stands as one of the most awesomely subversive movies ever to come outta Hollywood. See it, large and in charge on the big screen. Just don't, you know, talk about it afterwards.
