Daniel Phillips: Ice Cave

In Ice Cave, artist Daniel Phillips explored the longest continually operating paper manufacturing site, former Tileston and Hollingsworth paper mill in Hyde Park, Boston. Using water from the Neponset River that borders the property, Phillips dripped and sprayed water into the first floor opening of the crumbling building. The video,… Show more made from thousands of photographs, acts as a time-lapse of the formation of the sheet of icicles. Throughout most of the video Phillips’ silhouette is apparent, spraying the water while the images he projects become abstracted. Originally Phillips thought he was creating a screen out of ice, it soon became apparent that he had created a thick, freezing cave within the first floor of the old mill. Part performance, part site-specific installation, this work is at the crux of Phillips’ art practice, comprised of working on location, manipulating, filming, and photographing buildings, landscapes, and derelict spaces.
