That's because he keeps his distance from the world. He doesn't put himself on the line. He doesn't really feel it. But it's an un-lived life. He needs a shake-up. And it comes in the form of a lost work of modern art that a strange man gives him before killing himself. Or was it murder? The cops want to know, and that's not his only problem; just when Carter learns the artwork could be worth a fortune, and could change his life, it's gone.
