Toto Miranda, Josh Lambert, and Yvonne Lambert came together as a junky, dirty, hook-heavy electronic trio called the Octopus Project in the late '90s. Their music caught the ears of the folks at Peek-a-boo Records in 2001, and the band released their first album on that label, Identification Parade, one year later....

Austin, TX is home to The Black and White Years but Scott Butler, John Aldridge and Landon Thompson, actually met while attending Nashvilleʼs Belmont University in 2005. They performed together under a few band names before moving to Austin and settling into the electro-dance-rock sound that defines the The Black and White Years....

Even if you spun the Octopus Project’s “Hexadecagon” with no prior knowledge that the album began its life as a multimedia extravaganza, an eight-channel, eight-screen audiovisual pile-on of trippy imagery and electrifying electronic sounds performed during this year’s South by Southwest Music Festival, you’d probably still sense that the record’s origins were a little different.

“If you want to dance I could help you out … If you want to dance I will dance I’ll give that a try ” intones masterfully showy Black and White Years front man Scott Butler on the title track off “Patterns,” over a choir of synthesizers and a surgery-precise beat.
