12 Years a Slave

In the years before the Civil War, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is kidnapped and sold into slavery in the South. Subjected to the cruelty of one malevolent owner (Michael Fassbender), he also finds unexpected kindness from another, as he struggles continually to survive and maintain some of his dignity. Then in the 12th year of the disheartening ordeal, a chance meeting with an abolitionist from Canada changes Solomon's life forever.

There are many moments of heart-stopping horror in the extraordinary “12 Years a Slave,” British filmmaker Steve McQueen’s brutal, unblinking look at slavery in the antebellum South via the true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man and musician from Saratoga, N.Y., who was kidnapped into bondage in 1841 and was not able to return to his family until 1853.

An almost perfect movie

This movie clearly deserves its almost universal acclaim. It is so well written, directed, and performed, and tells a remarkable, if sometimes horrific, story. It is a must-see film.
