Princess Kaiulani was in fact engaged to Clive Davies, the British man portrayed in the film. THere is a letter stating so in the historical record. See the following link:

This review is a reprint of the New York Times 5/14 review by Mike Hale (not Mike Hula, a particularly odd typo). It includes an incendiary remark implying that Hawaiians by virtue of their lack of political prowess in the late 19th century helped engineer their own annexation-destruction. This is a reactionary distortion on the same level as those who blame on the holocaust of Native Americans on their "savagery." History is written by the victors but that doesn't make it right.

After playing Pocahontas in "The New World," Q'orianka Kilcher has moved about 5,000 miles west and three centuries ahead for her next feature, "Princess Kaiulani," thereby cornering the market on indigenous American princesses who sojourned in England, while also dangerously typecasting herself. At least her role as the pampered, Westernized niece of Hawaii's last king in the late 1800s does not require her to dance expressively in buckskin, though there are a few uncomfortable moments involving hula.
