The Five-Year Engagement
On their one-year anniversary, sous chef Tom Solomon (Jason Segel) plans to surprise his girlfriend, Violet Barnes (Emily Blunt), with an engagement ring. The lovers do end up engaged, but the fact that the proposal does not go exactly as planned proves to be a harbinger of things to come. The problem that plagues so many Judd Apatow productions unfortunately exists here, too. It's a matter of knowing when to say when, of knowing which bits should be trimmed and which should have been cut altogether. "The Five-Year Engagement" is so scattered, it feels like it lasts five years, and even the inherent likability of stars Jason Segel and Emily Blunt cannot overcome the pervasive sense of strain. Segel and Blunt star as an engaged couple who encounter multiple obstacles on the way to the altar. If it sounds like a drag, that's probably because it is.
