Usher

Mother was the choir director of St. Elmo's Missionary Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN. Was part of the preteen singing group Nu Beginning, which released the 1992 album Keep Dreamin' . At age 13, he was spotted by a LaFace A&R scout at a Star Search competition. Released his first single, "Call Me a Mack" from the Poetic Justice soundtrack, at age 14 and made his solo debut album the next year. It’s hard to believe Usher’s “Confessions” was released only four years ago. No album since has matched its chart dominance — four No. 1 hits (“Yeah,” “Burn,” “Confessions II” and “My Boo”) that spent more than half of 2004 atop Billboard. At the time, its commercial success (9 million records sold) was merely remarkable; in today’s climate, it’s unfathomable.

Just as Usher is releasing his sixth album, America has become fascinated with the train-wreck quality of celebrity divorces. It’s fortuitous timing, because there may be no one more qualified to comment on celebrity marital woes than the R&B lothario slowly creeping into his 30s.
